Hi, the more replies the better for everyone.

Does over use of NIC harm fish(it definitely hurts the wallet)? Do you use it like the bottle says(once a week) or do u believe that once a tank is established, the adding of NIC is wasteful if the water quality is still good that week.

Does over use of aquasafe harm fish? Is it better to us a little more for pre-conditioning water for water changes than to accidently use less. I have read it can burn the gills of fish just like ammonia does. Specifically what does chlorine do to fish, when it is in toxic amounts.

I also heard that over use of melafix harms fish as well. Is this true?

I personally do not over use products. I try to use the recommended amounts, but i would like to know peoples thoughts on the subject.

And any other idea or thoughts on additives.

thanks openwater

Hi,
Chlorine and Chloramine can kill the fish by interfering
with the exchange of O2 across the gill membranes.
Chlorine will "degass," somewhat, as it comes out of
an aerated faucet and as it sits in a bucket.
(usually takes about 24 hours if it is sitting)
Chloramine will not degass and will remain active
within the tank until it is chemically removed.

As for the others, IMO, it makes no sense to
continuously treat water with these chemicals.

I treat only for problems, and 90% of "our" problems
can be eliminated through routine maintenance, and
correctly performed, regular, water changes.

Ferts for planted tanks should only be added as
needed, when the plants or testing indicate that
need.

Frank

I agree with Frank. I do not usually add any chemicals to my tank except dechlorinator. When I do add other chemicals, it is after I've tried water changes, and I am absolutely sure that the situation calls for additives. The best way to prevent any problems in your tank is to change the water.

Water conditioner that removes chlorine and chloramine, 1 drop per gallon.

NitrAtes in the under stocked planted tanks.

Half dose ferts as needed, Cycle on occasion.

Carbon only when removing meds.

I dont' like adding anything extra for reasons...and because IMO they aren't necessary.

^_^
