Hi,
If you are completely replacing the substrate, then you
will wind up recycling the tank. It may not take quite
as long as if you were doing it with a brand new tank
as the filter will be established and can reseed the tank.

I really prefer EC. No rinsing, helps cycle the tank, and I've grown some very large root feeding plants in just 1" of substrate. I also like how it looks alot better than flourite. It does need time to settle with some water movement so the small particles go to the bottom and the large ones to the top. After it settles I've never had it cloud a tank again but when you first dump several bags in it takes 2-3 days to see into your tank.

Flourite needs a lot of rinsing, but in terms of benefit they're both pretty good. Depends on what kind of look you want. And to be completely honest, if you're not going with a tank planted heavily with heavy root feeders, regular gravel will do. Root tabs are often effective at providing nutrients to heavy root feeders - I have an ozelot sword that absolutely exploded after inserting one of these underneath. Problem is, they can't be moved for a few months after inserting them.

But between those two, EC, because I think it looks nicer
