Is shipping plants pretty much the same as shipping fish or is there something different I need to do?

Thanks

Shipping plants is a lot easier to do than shipping fish. for
one thing you can ship priority, and even snail mail plants
with only minor conseuqence.

The easiest method for shipping plants is wrapping them in
damp newspaper, and then sticking the newspaper in a plastic
ziplock. The hard part is making sure you don't get the
newspaper to wet, and at the same time avoid getting it to
dry. Other than this shipping plants is rather simple.

HTH,
Megil

Hi,
Along with what Megil said, don't put them in a package,
use a box so that they dont get crushed, folded, spindled,
or mutilated, in transist.

Plants that have been shipped to me were in a package (box).

Inside, there were a few layers of crumpled up newspaper, and within this were zip lock bags that contained a little tank water and the plants (no additional newspaper).

Shipping over night was fine, 2 day delivery showed some signs of distress on some of the plants.

I recieved plants to Malta from the UK & Germany & they took from 5-8 days to arrive & they where in perfect condition. They where zip locked & boxed, so that they don't be crushed.

I might consider using a shipping company other than the United States Postal Service if I were shipping plants. When I received my order from an online plant store via US mail the cardboard box was crushed on four sides! I'm amazed that the plants were okay and suffered no ill effects.

On side note: when I received my overnight shipment that contained my delicate little hilstream loaches the DHL guy was flipping the box around in his hands like it was a basketball or something! I nearly had heart failure. These shipping companies seem to have little respect for people's merchandise no matter what it is. The hillstreams are fine though. Thank goodness!

Good luck shipping your plants!!

My first shipment went will but I have another questions...I assume this time of year I would need to add a heatpack? It's Priority Mail, 2-3 days, and I'm shipping dwarf sag.

Depends where your sending it but to here in the midwest definitely. It's below freezing outside. Also putting live plants keep warm or something similar on the side can help. The ups guy here at least will deliver my live orders first and keep them in the front of the truck where it isn't quite so cold(or warm if it's summer). The post office will hold packages if it's too hot or cold and call us to recommend we pick them up. The fedex guys really don't care and if it doesn't require a signature will leave it sitting outside in front of the door in all weather extremes despite what the box says.
