I heard that spider plants can survive living in a fish tank even though they mainly grow in air. Is this true because i'm not totally buying it?

They'll survive, in the sense of "hover and seem very healthy without new growth for about a month, then rot and pollute the tank." True aqatics respond to inadequate lighting and nutrients much faster, so some people actually prefer to keep terrestrials like Spider plants and just throw them all out once a month. Personally, I think they'd save themselves some money buying silk ....

Hi,
I agree with the earlier post. As an asside,
I tried growing one in the top of my open HOB
filter open rooted. It too failed despite having
only the roots in the water. Possibly not enough
light, but probably, was simply waterlogged.

More agreement with the above posts. Spider plants melt pretty quickly, peace lilly (another one sometimes sold as an aquatic) lasts a bit longer but often won't put out new leaves. Spider plants won't do too well with the roots submerged without getting enough light, peace lilly being a low light plant will do alright with just their roots submerged for awhile, they will eventually want some soil to dig into though.

princessinabsentia yes it will do alright...check back in a year though also if you compair the root structure of a peace lilly growing in the tank to one growing out of the tank...the roots will answer everything. If the roots turn to mush the plant just won't do well.

go with the golden queens insted, they live in and out of water, a week after putting in 1 leaf i had a good plant and 2 more leaves, they love water and i havent had any die on me for like 6 months, just remove some leaves that seem unhealthy and they will rood any where u lye them down or burry a section in to the gravel and soon it will root, i once had a root forest, it was cool, untill i had to clean the tank, i had to de root some of it.

before i moved to memephis i had a phildendrum in the tank for over a year with well constructed roots. large white roots just like the philo i have in a pot at work. i guess it just has to do with how you keep your aquarium.
