with the anarcis, etc there are stems, but no roots. will these plants survie or will they die, like cut dry plants from the flower store.

I'm confused, when you say "will they die" what are you doing to them? Reread your post, what are you trying to say?
(or maybe i am the incompetant one...)

Hi,
No the plant will not die. Anacharis is one of the many
plants that will grow floating, and any roots that form
will drop down from the main stalk towards the bottom
of the tank. These plants draw their nutrients directly
from the water and will, if in sufficiant quantity, lower
your nitrates (the end product of the nitrogen cycle).

Anacharis, Hornwart, duckweed, and several others are
excellent floating plants. Although anacharis, is generally
considered to be a "cold water plant" it will grow in
tanks kept at "tropical" temperatures.

You can choose to root anacharis by snipping the stalk
in half and the planting the halves in the gravel,
or simply allow them to float. Folks here on the site
have reported "ropes" of anacharis many many feet long
coiled up at the surface of the tank. It is an excellent
food for plant eating fish, provides shelter for babies,
and support for bubble nests.
