I have all-glass hoods and I could stick a 25w over my 5g if I had a reason to put 5wpg on that tank. You just have to loosen the screw on the plastic shield so the shield doesn't sit as tight against the hood. The only tank I can't put alot of light on is my 5g hex by marineland. It has this water proof plastic seal around the ba |

Wendtii are quite hardy to being moved around and even when crypts melt their leaves they usually don't die. They'll come back so long as the main plant and roots are still healthy. To avoid crypt melt rinse the plant alot before replanting including when you first get them. I believe the pygmy chain and pygmy grass are high light plants preferring closer to 4wpg but I'm not certain we're talking about the same plants. Water sprite is suppose to be a fairly low light hardy plant but somehow I killed mine and don't know much else about it. Flourish is a good all around fertilizer but what GirlieGirl8519 was talking about is flourish excel. A liquid carbon source meant to be used when you don't want to set up co2 injection. It's not quite as good as co2 and dosing excel instead of co2 is much more expensive for big tanks but it works great for smaller tanks. Very useful if your running 2wpg or more on a small tank and don't want to use co2. |

I have that and Flourish Excel (sometimes just referred to excel). "Cryptocoryne wendtii Green" - if you got that then you have a crypt. I like to shorten the word cryptocoryne...its so long and i forget how to spell it! ![]() |

The others I don't know anything about. Anubias need to be on rocks or driftwood, but you already have that taken care of. I think the reason mine are doing good is because the 10g is short. The light gets to the plants more. I am so amazed at how my wisteria is looking. The wisteria I put in the 55g only looks healthy on the tops, the rest is algae covered. Swords usually have large root systems, which will grow, so I wouldn't plant anything too close to it. My ozelot sword got pretty wide and I have a crypt wendtii planted near it. That's one reason I want to take the sword out..so my crypt can grow. One tip is don't move the crypt once its planted...I haven't done it but I have heard they will melt and may die if replanted. They like to stay in one place. Good luck with your plants. I know I love the way my planted 10g looks and I can't wait until Wed. when the plants for my 55 will be here. If you can get some Flourish Excel it is a good source of carbon for plants and helps alot I think. I'm not familiar with Nourish but as long as it has iron, potassium, and other elements in it, it should work fine. :%) |

I have of these in a 10 gallon already. I have all the plants that I listed coming this week already. I know I bought some big ones but I have a 29 gallon that is really empty that I need to fill up. It is 16 high. I have green rocks in it and have already spent near $35 just for the rocks alone. I stacked some of the rocks but they still are only about 7 in high at the most. I may try to let some of these plants float. Thats one thing I need to know is how do I put these in my tank. Do they grow to rock? Float? Attach to gravel?? I bought the nana and the other plant already attached to driftwood from my LFS. I am going to put the smaller plants in two of my ten gallons. When things start getting too big for the 10 and really start spreading I will move them and thin them out then. Im glad you said yours were doing well even when you didnt use anything. I am going to use Nourish. I thought I had saw those kind of bulbs at Wal Mart in the fish section also. Im going to look there as soon as I can. |

The wisteria is doing great, but I have too much in there and it is taking over the tank. It is so much greener than the wisteria in my 55g. I have 2 10 watt screw in fluorescent bulbs. (2 wpg) I got them at walmart in the fish section. They look like the ones in your picture. Anubias Nana, petite version, would have been better for the 10g. My nana is pretty big and takes up alot of space. I am putting another crypt in this week and more dwarf sag. If you can get the bulbs and find these plants, they should do well. I am using fertilizers, but the plants were doing well before I started. edit: I don't have experience with pygmy chain sword, yet. I have some coming for my 55g this week. If you look at LittleFish's log for his 125g, it seems to spread pretty quick, and looks as if it grows a few inches tall. That may be too much for a 10g and would quickly take it over. Dwarf sag is not so bushy and doesn't get tall. Mine doesn't spread very fast either. Last edited by GirlieGirl8519 at 27-Nov-2005 23:23 |

I have two differnt knids of hoods. Some came with the 10 gallon tank set ups. The others are made by Allglass. one of them only has one socket that works. |

With incadescent light 3 watts per gallon? What do I need to do when I get these plants as far as putting them in the tank? I dont and am not going to get into CO2. I have hang on filters. Tanks these plants will go into are all 10 gallons. Most will have two-three maybe four fish per tank. I understand these plants are very easy and need light to moderate care. Any info is appreciated!! Last edited by ladiejl at 28-Nov-2005 22:06 |

You have to shove the water sheild a little and wedge it in there but it will fit. However you don't need that much. You only need a pair of 15w or so bulbs which will easily fit and 2 would give you 3wpg. These are not the long tube bulbs that fit in a regular flourescent hood. They screw in just like incandescents and are actually compact flourescents. Incandescents are pointless. They don't have a good spectrum of light and produce more heat than light. 3wpg of incandescent is no comparison to 3wpg of flourescent. We're talking apples and oranges here. You can't grow anywhere near the same plants and if you try to put on enough incandescent light to grow the higher light plants you'll melt your hood and fry your fish. Tried it before and now I'm short one 10g hood. |

I cant very well take the hood with me to the store or take the bulbs out of the packaging. Cant you buy bulbs just like what I have that are flourescent instead of incadescent? I think I remember seeing them at WalMart in the fish section of the store. How many watts per gallon do you use of the flourescent ones? Isnt it like 1 or 2 watts per gallon then? So Ill put the amazon in my 29 gallon........... Last edited by ladiejl at 27-Nov-2005 17:24 |

You can get them from any hardware store. Buy only those that are labled SUNLIGHT or DAYLIGHT. They run in the 6700K range are excellent for plants and viewing fish, consume less electricity, and are rated at more watts. If by "Amazon" you mean a sword plant, it will out grow the 10G tank in a few months. Heck these things (some of them) can out grow a 125G tank!
