hey all,
i got some plants and i took the metal strips off and tied the plants tosome rocks from my garden. My friend says to keep those metal strips on but they seem to not be a good idea. What do yall think?

Hey,

I never leave me plants wrapped with the metal thing. Most of the time there are more bunches in one thing than I want to plant at the same spot anyway (I usually use between 1 and 3 stems together for planting, depending on plant and size).

I have to confess that anchoring the stems in the gravel can be a challenge, but you will learn it. It helps to remove the lower leaves and to stick it in the gravel on a slight angle, at least 2” deep.

What plants did you get anyway and why did you tie them to rocks rather then putting them in the gravel?

I have just put in 12 bunches of 6 stem plants (and more coming) half had rubber bands (softer stems) and the others had the thin wire ties.
I cut above these and planted about one inch deep I also removed about 1/3 from the tops of the plants. At the moment I am wanting the plants to get established rather than growing taller.

Remember if you area gardener this is what you should also do trim the roots and the tops before planting.

Always better to remover bands and plant stems with a little space inbetween. I don't know how much light you have but more light will be able to get down to bottom of plant until they get more established.

ok sweet so i was not barking off the wrong tree by taking them apart. The reason i had them tied to rocks is its hard to keep them from floating away. I am trying to set up a molly fry friendly tank because i wanna do an unofficial breeding experiment, though i am going to pay close attention to size and comfor for the babes.

What plants are they? Aside from a few exceptions most do better rooted directly in gravel. Some will not survive above the substrate.
