i have a 55 gallon fresh water that i am planning on making it a planted tank. But my current lighting is so bright, that it would make the planted tank look very misplaced. I have 2 flourescent strip lights currently (one on each hood) I want to have a more low-light setting, my tank currently looks like a saltwater reef because it's so bright! someone please help me.

Hi,
Well the obvious answer is to remove one of the bulbs.
However, before you do that, what are the characteristics
of the bulbs you have? What are they (T-12, T-8, compact
flourscents, etc?) What is their Kelvin ratings? What
are their wattages?

If they are over 10,000K then remove both bulbs as they
were designed for salt water tanks, corals, and other
invertebrates.

Until you can furnish that information, I would be
reluctant to do anything.

Depending upon some of the answers, you should probably
do nothing and enjoy a healthy planted aquarium. Tanks
with 3+watts per gallon, once well planted, are actually
not that bright. Also, keep the tank filled to the
plastic trim, that prevents the light from streaming
out into your eyes when looking at it.
