I did the little java fern nano project Kitten posted about here. I'd like to put one on our balcony but I was wondering is there a safe temperature range for java fern?

Also, will java fern grow attached to rock like it will to driftwood?

Rocks-- definately. Java fern can attach itself to just about anything. I'd just stay away from rocks that are too smooth. The rough texture will help it attach better.

As for the temperature, I'm not too sure about. It's a very hardy plant, but mother nature can be mean to plants in the open. (I'm in New England, I see that all the time with my houseplants) I'd just say treat it as a tropical houseplant. Not too hot, not too cold... but it takes a lot of heat to kill a tropical plant (like a woodstove).

They certainly will attach themselves to rocks as previously stated they do prefer a rough rock surface so that the fine hairy root system can get a grip onto the rock surface. I would also strongly suggest tying it down with a fine fishing line they can be rather a slow grower.

As far as temp I think they could stand most day temps except the extremes every day. I would be more concerned with the night temps. If you are in the cold climates keep it indoors during these times.

Regardless of the temps I would not be keeping it out doors it could cause other problems algea etc.

2 very important things about Java Fern.

It must be kept moist at all times ! So keeping it in a pot will probably kill it. In the wild Java Fern is found growing emmersed around waterfalls where it is kept moist by the water spray. Drying out is death sentance for Java Fern.

Java Fern is far more susceptible to temps that are too high ! Despite this being an "easy" plant I'm sure you heard of people who just can't grow it, it turns black and dies off. This almost because of high water temp.

I learned this from local guys. I live in Java so they should know

Java fern will grow in temps from 60 to 85 and probably survive a night or 2 lower than that or a day higher than that. If it's not warm enough yet then it should be within the week. It would be best to bring it inside during the middle of the day this summer. I wouldn't try to grow java fern in a tank over 80F. It probably wouldn't be happy. It actually does best wedged behind a rock in my unheated river tank.
