I was told by someone that they gravel vac their sandbed. This sounds like a giant mess to me. Anyone that does this? I don't see why you would in a reef tank but maybe you know something I don't know.

I don't think that's a real good idea. It will disturbe the sand bed, bacteria, pods, etc. The most I do with mine is a stir up the very top surface, perhaps an 1/8 of an inch.
