I have plenty of pics....Unfortunately its still empty with only dust bunnies as the occupants. Im still getting money saved for Pumps, calcium reactor, new bulbs and the OM units (bout $2000-$3000).

I took a little break from tanks awhile back, but Im back in it now

Yes, Use Liana's tank as inspiration...also use her willingness to take things slow as inspiration also. She has done a great job at researching and not rushing into things as far as stocking! Liana

what time? The tank crashed 2 times in a 3 month time frame.

1st time...

I had a external above tank powerhead and the bracket broke. The powerhead fell into to the tank and the breaker or GFCI didnt kick the power off to that outlet. The tank had electricity running thru it for approx. 6-8 hours. I didnt lose a lot of stuff (some sps, and a black and white maxima clam) but EVERYTHING bleached.

2nd time...

about 2-3 months after the electricity incident I bought another house and moved the tank. I had a seperate holding tank set up already for the rock and the corals. There was a freak snow storm on the day that we were moving the tank (at the end of April) and I think everything getting too cold caused a huge ammonia spike...that and I dont think I had enough surface aggitation. Out of that crash I ended up losing EVERY coral that I had, and every fish except for one clownfish

I have only seen a few pictures of your tank so far unfortunately. I would love to see more pictures, but I don't know where to find them. Do you have any other posts on here with good pictures of your tank? I would love it if you wanted to post them on some of my threads, maybe it owudl bring some more people to my threads...

I am definitely going to try to take my time with this Nate. I will ahve to actually because otherwise I won't be able to do it. I don't have enough money right now, I have to save money to get my stuff just like you.

I can't wait until I can see soem pictures of your tank though. I am sure it will be AWESOME! Has Liana given you a full stocking list for it yet? I would love for her to help me with mine when I get my supplies decided on.

Hey DRO, aren't you upposed to be getting some polyps and a bunch of other stuff from some of your friends? I thought I saw somewhere in a post that you were. If so, how is that going? I haven't heard anythign from either of you in a while so I thought I would check back.

Nate has a lot of friends/dealers holding corals for him for when he gets his new tank set up.

There's always a couple of us who are waiting on frags from a friend. I've been meaning to pick some up from a friend but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Im thinking I need to stand on the street corner and beg for money to get it up and going by the first of the year. Its amazing how time moves so fast when you have a personal goal you want to accomplish!

Just an update...one Sequence Hammerhead bought, 2 more Hammerheads and 2 Oceans motions to go! Tax returns should take care of those and leave a little money left for plumbing and a DIY Kalk reactor

Ok.....a HUGE order with Marine Depot has been placed...so the pumps, calcium reactor, MH bulbs, RO membrane, and 2in and 1.5in bulkheads are on their way.

Ive kinda been working on the framing for the canopy and finishing up the framing on the stand...all I need to finish up on the stand and canopy is the cosmetic portion of it now.

Think the hole in the wall for the plumbing is big enough?

Im wanting to do Vent's as the main display fish, but Im gonna worry about stocking with corals before adding any fish. It will probably be quite awhile before I add any fish that will eat any of the fauna/infauna.

Indeed...BUT if the rock work goes as planned (HAHA thats a good one eh?) There should be plenty of shade for them in caves/overhangs, etc. Im even considering doing a "floating" reef as Anthony describes in his coral prop book

This tank will be stocked with very few frags/colonies. Ive decided that Im gonna go for few and big instead of a "bonsai garden" style.

So far your set up looks pretty freaking sweet I must say but have you thought about water vaper issues? It doesn't take long for water to start causing problems with walls and stuff like that. You might have already talked about this but I missed it I guess. Look forward to seeing more!

Most of the evaporation will take place in the basement...I already have vent. ducts in place in the basement.

Im prepared for the evaporation and the moisture. My old 180 evaporated close to 12 gallons a day. Colorado is pretty dry, so the added moisture from evaporation isnt noticable.

Anyway, here is the equipment list so far.

Aquamedic spacelight X 2....running four 250w Phoenix 14k bulbs, each unit has a moonlight

Aquamedic turboflotor protein skimmer, Lifereef protein skimmer, and a "predator" custom built skimmer (yes, 3 skimmers )

6 Phosban reactors....3 reactors running phosban and 3 reactors running carbon

Korallin Calcium reactor (rated for 800g)controlled by an Aquamedic PH Computer

Redsea Ozone, ozone generator and controller all in one

Two Sequence Barracuda pumps for closed loop

One Sequence Hammerhead pump for return pump....with all 3 pumps I will be pushing just shy of 14,000gph (50ish times turnover)

PVC manifold...I decided to save some money after talking to Anthony Calfo and try the plain jane manifold before purchasing two of the Oceans Motions 4-ways

Zeovit reactor/system...I have the setup, but Im not sure if Im gonna be using it or not, atleast not until the tank is going strong and I have a lot of the corals added.

Two 1000W heaters...I hate paying $140 for a heater, but it will take away a TON of clutter in the fish room.

Kalkwasser Reactor....DIY of course

Hmmm...I think thats it for now anyway. After my initial order I realized that I wanted/needed more stuff so I racked up an additional $600 on the second order

How did you DIY your Kalk reactor, do you have a link for one? I'm getting tired of buying all the B-ionics, and I've read you can buy pickling lime or somesuch thing. Sounds cheaper too. I've never quite understood this Kalk stuff, it's mentioned a lot, but rarely explained(I could use a link here too).

#2 - my monsterous emerald crab has been eating my princesses...i've only seen one so far today, but i saw a nice princess head inside of his claws...lovely

You can go the non ghetto way too....it just takes more time to save. You can always add non ghetto versions later on down the road.

Your emerald was probably just cleaning up the tank...my guess is that the Princess was already dead and he was just taking advantage of a free meal.

He's taking down one per night.

They look fine when I say goodnight.

They have no heads when I see them in the morning.

Case closed.

Update...Just walked out of home depot with $356 worth of PVC, and PVC fittings for the plumbing

Now its time to start working

I assume the middle is from the return pump, and the 2 on either side are closed loops, what are the ones on the far left and far right?

yeah, the far left and far right are 2" drain lines going to the basement fuge..the one in the center is a 2" return line from the basement, and the others are 2" closed loops.

Everything is dry fitted, I just have to glue them up and finish the plumbing in the basement

Have you figured out what you are doing with the fuge? Last I heard you mention xenia, clams, and even aptasia. What's the verdict?

Also, DSB in the main display, or BB? I don't know if you had decided on that either. *hopes for DSB*

the fuge(s) will just be regular ole fuge(s) with chaetomorpha growing in them...they will probably be bare bottom.

I plan on having a DSB in the main tank, but that might change depending on how much the flow kicks up the sand. Ill give it a couple weeks to settle before I decide. I hope it doesnt kick up too much cause if it does its going to be a pain to get 850ish lbs of sand out of the tank LOL

Sorry peeps, I havent been around much lately. A lot of stuff going on with my work and being President of the reef club is taking more time than I thought it would

BTW why did you go with sequence reeflo pumps attached to an OM units. Instead of tunze stream 6200 pumps?


Tunze = less electricity a tad higher flowrate a little bit cheaper(in aus atleast) ,if it breaks its not as much trouble as a closed loop and its alot quieter.

The tank is acrylic and the lights are ceiling suspended.

I went with the sequence pumps because in the long run they are cheaper, and give a wider range of flow options when attached to the closed loop....and the closed loop is also easier to hide than big and bulky tunze's are.

Heh, I agree about the tunze. People throw those things right in plain sight, and I look and say "ha, there's a UFO in your tank." It would be one thing if they were cheaper, like powerheads, but that's not the case. Those things are expensive. I use powerheads, and think they are ugly too, but I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on the ugly suckers. I guess it would help if they hid them behind the live rock or something, but people tend to hang them off the top of the tank, in the front corner.

I spent a good deal of money on heaters when setting up my tank.

I haven't seen them on more than once.

The fans on the other hand, turn on daily.

Why are you spending so much on heaters?

or attrached some device that senses when the temp is two high and turns them on ?

i use a simple reefkeeper system

it triggers the fan when the temp hits like, 78 or 80 or something like that

The hammer head is for the return line from the basement and will also run the calcium reactor, Kalk reactor, and feed the phosban reactors, along with possibly a skimmer or two.

I will have two "fuges", but only one with have chaetomorpha in it.

Liana, I will be getting two 1000w heaters....with almost 500g of water and the bigger fuge sitting on the concrete floor in the basement I will need both of them...plus I the warmest my furnace is set in the winter time is 55 degrees

my sump and fuge are on concrete floors > . <

actually, lately we've had some rather chilly days here, and i have seen the heaters turn on once or twice...but idk those lights are just so flippin hot i feel like they heat the tank for me...and it's not like i have powerheads or something that would be contributing. whatever.
