Just found out the hard way, bugger. Used meds rated as safe too. Flesh fall away from the body.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

What illness did your fish have, LHG? Sorry to hear that.

Whitespot, no reaction to meds for four days then massive necrosis, literally fell apart before my eyes, had to very regretfully euthanise him. From no visible sign of poisoning to total bodily disintegration took maybe 12 hours. One of the most shocking reactions ive ever seen. First a white patch appeared, then from normal behaviour he got a midbody paralysis, then the veins in the tail swelled to five times the normal size, then almost one entire side of skin surface layer fell away leaving only unpigmented layers of skin ,then a hole opened up on each side of the stomach, literally within seconds of each other, and his breathing became critical. I could do no more for him and simply administered a massive clove oil dose so he would feel no more pain and he passed away.

Did as much autopsy as I could bear, he had hemorrhaged in every vein in outer barrier tissue , and outer muscle, only the heart and brain were unaffected. His inner musculature was in better condition, but deprived of blood he simply split open and outer muscles cracked when he tried to move. He would have died as a result of circulatory failure, but he actually died of respiratory mainly thanks to me finishing him off, but it was a testament of his personal toughness that he died neither from infection, or osmotic failure, both of which were imminent anyway. There was no internal infection of any significance, he simply fell apart. The meds had forced his vascular tissue into a state of corrosion. The result was massive self inflicted bodily injury, the tissues unable to retain life or elasticity.

Used the meds before on pictus, shilbe species, and clown loaches to no ill effect. Now I see why fully adult specimens are few and far between in the hobby. Uv sterilisation is really the only way youll keep one alive unless youre very lucky and never get hit by whitespot in a 10 year plus period. I was pre-prepared with meds that were safe, water changed after 6 hours per day medication to purge the overdose risk, everything.Used low doses, had detox procedures ready too. It was so fast from the first visible sign I stood no chance of saving him. Gutted. You cant deworm them, deprotozoan them, treat them for external parasites, nothing. Even a mormyrid would have survived the treatments. Im staggered by how such a huge catfish can be so vulnerable.

Antiparasitic treatment is impossible, just impossible.Which leaves only prevention. UV or nothing I guess. All because of a £3 piece of xmas moss. The whitespot carried presumably in tomites on the plant were aggressive, I had to treat, they reproduced so fast with so much impact on the fish I had no option. Even the acaras , usually a bulletproof fish by comparison barely pulled through, they had ceased to eat, went straight to the bottom and just looked like they were waiting to die, now however, they are eating well and I have no doubt they will make a good recovery. The whitespot is eliminated, but considering it was caught same day, I am staggered about how hard it hit. New strains are afoot methinks. They will not leave this house alive though. LHG is highly angry and in exterminator mode.
