Have seen many that languish in suboptimal conditions, and have over a dozen specimens myself. They too start developing slime layer problems around the mouth and eyes if not given the cleaner water qualities. Nitrate much above 15-20 ppm causes problems.

I would have written it more like "high nitrates will make this fish more susceptible to fungal infection..." I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

EDIT:I dont think the "high nitrates" dillema was at all a bad point.
