Do they exist? I like the idea of two small heaters instead of one bigger one, but what if you have a Betta in a 5 gallon? (Actually I already have a 25 watt for it, but in case I ever get ANOTHER small tank...)

I can't find a 10 or 15 watt heater anywhere. Does such a thing exist?

I've never seen one any smaller than a 25 watt, but that doesn't mean there not available.

As much as I hate to say it...try walmart. I seem to remeber reports of 10w heaters from there.

As much of a firm believer as I am in "a heater in every tank" there are some exceptions. If your air temp doesn't change between daytime temps and nighttime temps you may be okay with out one. Additionally using a blanket around the tank @night to retain heat can help.

Babelfish -

I read your post and thought - what a great idea! for sure Walmart would have them, but they (at least the one near me) don't seem to - the smallest they had (no wattage on the outside) was rated for 5-15 gallons.

Unfortunately the temp difference in my house in the winter is too drastic between day and night (Southern California - my housemates still leave the windows open 24 hours a day) to be without a heater - especially for a Betta. He's got a 25 watt right now in 5 gallons, so I'm ok, I just get frightened with the reports of heaters breaking and cooking the fish - I'd rather go with two 10's.

But they seem to not exist. Anyone else have ideas of where I might look?

Thanks for the replies - at least I'm not the only one having trouble finding them.

You're not the only one that's had trouble, they are hard to find .

Which means you're only option is to get a 10 gallon tank for the betta, increase the lighting and plant it up :88).

Well, I found one- and you would think that would be good, but unforunately it's 11 feet long...

It's meant for bringing fresh warm-ish water to plants in a planted aquarium.

I have a few questions about the reptile things -

1) Could they make a tank too hot? I would guess it depends on how you position them, eh? Do folks have experience with them working for a small tank?

2) Would they keep the temp consistant, or wouldn't they just put out consistant heat? So instead of the tank fluctuating between 64-72 it would fluctuate between 74-82? I would think that since they aren't underwater they would just put out consistant heat and so the temp fluctuations in my house would still exist, just in a warmer range.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to get a planted 10 gallon like Babelfish suggested!

Walmart should carry what they call a "junior" heater, rated for 2-5 gallon tanks. I believe it's 7.5 watts and under ten bucks, if I remember correctly. However, there's no controls... you just plug it in and settle with whatever temp it gives you. *shrugs*

I've never tried them, so I can't say if they're any good or not, but they are available. Don't know the brand offhand.

Oh, and places like petsmart, petco... those should carry the heating pads. Look in the reptile section. Again, never used one for a tank, but I've seen them.

mel -- Could they make a tank too hot? -- theoretically if you got an overpowered one, yes.

Would they keep the temp consistant, or wouldn't they just put out consistant heat? -- it's a constant thing, either on or off. You'd have to set an aquarium up witout any fish and let it rip for a day or two to see where the temperature settles.
