as a rule of thumb - 10GPH for every gallon.

20 gallon = 200gph.

7-10X per hour for filtration.

Since it's a long tank you may want to consider useing a powerhead with the filter to help with circulation rather than just the filter. I'm running both a HOB filter and a submersible powerhead in most of my tanks. It will of course depend on the type of fish you keep .

also what kind of filter?. my cannisters do only like 4x turnover but they have much more media room, but my tanks also have internal filters to help them out a bit and to give a bit of current.
