Would a 50 watt heater be too much in an acrylic, 5 gallon hex tank with built in filter/bio wheel? There is fry in the tank.

A 50w heater is a bit much for a 5 gal, especially with fry. The rate at which a 50w would heat the water may prove too drastic for the lil ones.

You can purchase smaller heaters, or use a heat pad for 'em

Get a 25W heater or a heat pad.
