Stands aren't cheap unless you build them yourself with 2X4. I've made a few of my own, and they are much cheaper, more sturdy, but don't really look as good. I'll admit I'm not a great woodworker though. Some people have made their own that look 10X better than those you can buy at a fish store.

Just a peace of advise you may want to use something that will not move for the leg support other than concrete blocks. Pine 2X4 with carriage bolts if you going to hide it anyway why not make it safe. 60gal is a lot of water and weight. If you have small kids or kids visiting safety first. my father-in-law is fire chief here in Miami and he made me strap mine down because of the number of kids killed by accidents where the tank crushed them. All my stands are Store bought except for the 10 gal breeding room and those are on 2x4 shelves I built into the wall.

I just get worried when someone say lets put it on blocks. They wobble and move easily

Cat + Fish in shaky stand = Fish living in your sink

yeah good point plus they are really heavy. i think i will go with wood stand. what do you think about a 2x4 box as the top and 4x4 for the legs. for the top think of a house wall frame tipped flat.

I don't really think you need 4X4 for the legs. I think that would be overkill and $$. The stands that you can buy at the store that are pretty sturdy don't even use 2X4.

I looked around the net and found these sites that will help you.

Here is a site that has a simple 2x4 DIY stand.
http://saltaquarium.about.com/library/blank/bldiy2x4cabinetframe.htm

This one designs the 2X4 stand: tells you the length and
safest layout
http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php

This one shows you how to make it square and sturdier: http://www.sydneycichlid.com/content/?page_id=108

Anyway enjoy and I think you will be very happy. All my stands were DIY in the 80's and I wish I would have never gotten rid of a couple of them.
