Does activated carbon remove CO2 from the water? I'm thinking of adding CO2 to my planted tank and got to wondering about it. Carbon is supposed to remove trace elements and gasses from the water. Does that include CO2?

Nope. However it has been known to sometimes remove trace nutrients that plants need to grow. It can lead to nutrient deficiencies in some tanks. Not always but often enough that people are somewhat cautious when using it on a planted tank and there are now several other forms of chemical filtration as well as special grades of carbon designed for planted tanks. Cheaper or lower grade forms of activated carbon can also release phosphates if not changed about every other week.

Hi there,
In a well established cycled tank there is really no need to use Carbon at all. I would just simply remove it from the filter.
Also, as carbon becomes saturated with stuff it starts to release it back into the water, its only really effective for about 1 weeks time.
Keep on hand for removing meds, dont use otherwise.
Its better for the plants to not have it.
