i am thinking of adding an external filter to my tank.

The tank is 125 litres and the filter i have now does 600 l/h but the filter is very big and takes up quite a bit of room.

So my plan is to add an external filter, probably fluval 204.

Once thats been running for a while add another internal filter which will when the bacteria has coloninized in it replace the big filter which i have now. this will probably be a fluval 3+.

So in total the 3+ does 700 l/h and the 204 does 420/680 l/h.

In total that comes to 1120 minimum.

Is this too much filtration?

You never need to be worried on such thing as "over filtration". It is also good that you provide more than enough filtration so that if a filter fails, you still got others to support your tank.

And more filters means less work on each filter hence still maintain their quality over time.

I just wondered about the current in the water though with the internals because i cant afford a huge external filter.

ive never used an external filter before, where abouts does the outtake part go in the tank

I've got 3 filters on my 29g tank...each of them is capable of filtering the tank by themself, but not very well.

The tank is currently turning over 15.5X an hour...plus my 150 GPH powerhead. My hillstream loaches love it

I once had a 150 GPH filter on my 2.5g tank...that's about 70X an hour...my crayfish loved that

I'd definately go ahead and over filter the tank

Well there is such a thing as over filtering a tank. Some fish really don't appreaciate the added water flow.

As far as where it goes...should be able to put it wherever your little heart desires...you might want to ajust it depending on how the fish react. I know I moved my poweheads around a bit till I found a happy balance.

^_^
