DIY cave background | |
ImRandy85 Enthusiast Bleeding Blue Posts: 254 Kudos: 137 Votes: 75 Registered: 19-Dec-2006 | I ran across this while I was looking for some ideas for caves. I thought it was a neat idea for all the cichlid keepers out there. http://www.duboisi.com/diy/BNdiygrotto/bndiygrotto.htm Does anyone have any pictures of caves you have made? I'm interested in making some kind of cave of my own. Preferably something tiered. |

He just ties zip ties through holes of his acrylic tank so I assume you could just cut the zip ties and take it off the back to clean. Then you could just attach new zip ties to it. He suggests hangars for glass tanks so you could just take it right off to clean. |

I thought about it for my plecos, but never got around to it. Dr. Bonke did a really nice custom 3D background setup using styrofoam and some paint. The time he put into it was quite a bit more than this setup would need, but the results were amazing!! I'll see if he can get some pics in here if he still has them |

Once I get that 500g tank I'd love to have . I just checked the list of threads, and my own background report was still alive, you can find it here: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/threads/11268.1.htm?22#. It's not quite as fancy as the Ankor Wat, but the general method is pretty similar |

I do wonder about lack of circulation behind it. That could cause some issues unless you stuck powerheads back there or hide your spraybar and intake tube behind it but then you'd have to overfilter and add powerheads to make sure it circulated the whole tank well enough. Cleaning wouldn't be too bad. Just lift it up or cut sections out of the top edge so you can slide a gravel vac tube in there and suck out the waste. |

They seem to use styrofoam and cement is any of this toxic to the fish and how long will it last. [Click here: how to make aquarium backgrounds - Google Search] |

The agression was getting the best of them and all the rock I bought wasnt stoping it. Buying all of that lava rock took a big chunck out of my pocket, that would have saved me a fortune. I wish you luck on your endevor to replicate and improve. "There is also a Clown Pleco in this tank some where. I am telling you, HE IS IN HERE." |
