Hey all;

I was just wondering, what (in your opinion) is going to be the best External Power Filter for a 250L (4x1.5x1.5ft) tank. For years, I've had a AquaClear, but mum says she is sick of the noise - hence, its gotta go. Its been good to me. I don't want to change!

Anyways,
Tarky

Aquaclears or marineland filters which include penguin and emperor filters. Emperors are generally only used on larger tanks. None of those should be noisy unless you let the water level get too low or there is something wrong with the impeller. If it's making a splashing noise you aren't keeping your tank topped off well enough. Just need to add more water. If it's making rattling or humming noises try taking it apart and cleaning it very thoroughly. Make sure to pull the impeller out and clean the area where it sits. Toothbrushes and bottle cleaning brushes are useful for that. Anything with white calcium deposits or other junk can be soaked in a cup of vinegar to help dissolve it. If that doesn't eliminate the noise the impeller might be damaged and you can order a replacement from the manufacturers website.

sham;

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, mum's got her heart set on an external filter like the Eheim Professionel, so any ideas more in that area?

Cheers,
Tarky

Your mum has a very good filter in mind. Let her buy it, they're expensive Look at the professional 2 model 2026. They have excellent media selection, quiet, easy operation and will be more than adequate for your tank size

Good luck
Tim

openwater - Where can I get some information/pics on the Eheim wet/dry filter?

Thanks
Tarky

Edit: Just looked at the price for an Eheim Professional II 2026 - $460! Mum's gonna die!

How about a Hagen Fluval 305? Its quite a bit more affordable, although my (old, old, old) PFK says that they are noisy.

Edit: It is $260.

Edit: Or the Eheim Classic 2215 at $250?

You didn't say you were looking for a cannister but a power filter. Aquaclears are power filters. For cannisters any eheim would be great. They are considered the quiestest of cannister filters. Fluvals are moderately noisely and most say they can hear a slight hum if your near the tank. They also have some media bypass where the water flows through the sides of the cannister without passing through the filtration media.

Excellent biological filter, but you will need something to provide mechincal filter. I use a large aquaclear powerhead with the quick filter attachment(double stacked) and it does a very good job.

I just bought an Eheim Pro II 2026 from Big Al's Online, it was $170...and it included a media starter kit. The UPS guy should be dropping it off any minute now! I'm very excited to get my tank up and running...I've heard great things about the filter.
