Okay not a modification on the filter itself, rather in what it sits on.....

I've got a "pond" in my living room...the filter on it looks a little like this:

What I'd absolutly love is to make something that will support the filter from underneith (the way the tank slopes in prevents me from using the intake tubes or even a piece of acrylic tubing from home depot) and be able to surround it with some styrofoam "rocks" so I can have a waterfall effect....maybe combined with some real slate pieces to prevent the PH from wandering too high....

So any ideas....? ? ?

what exactly do you mean "support from underneath"? i understand the waterfall part, you'll just have to figure out how you want to build it. but i don't understand what you mean by "support from underneath". does the filter not sit correctly?

Rocks can only be neutral, or raise the ph, being made from minerals...
The only thing to lower the ph that I know of to do that is peat. The waterfall should look pretty cool !

I would add some peat to mine, my ph is 8 but I don't want the water to be stained as it might keep some light from reaching the plants ?

The motor should not be allowed to get wet, as it is not designed for this. I would try to adapt the intake to use some flexible tubing (you might need to get creative), as there is too much risk of an electrical hazard if you put the filter "over" the water, rather than hanging on the side of the tank.

Good Luck!

Nope it doesn't sit properly on the rim of the tank, even after the lip was cut by my step-dad
because of the same slope of the sides that prevents me from using the intakes. What I was thinking was of something that the filter could sit on that would rasie it up as well....would a box made out of MDF work ? so long as it was painted to protect against any spills.

How about somthing like a 1" board (which is actually3/4" braced up on the outside of your tank which would raise your filter up higher and keep it level. A tubing like air supply only a larger, to fit over your intake going down into the tank, then get inventive on the waterfall out flow with what ever look you want. Remember JB Weld when you go shopping.

you could also try using a piece of styrofoam cut in just the right way to allow what you want. and *definitely* remember jb weld when you go shopping, that stuff is tank safe according to their customer service people and it glues SOLID once it sets.

Who's JB weld

And yes puddle cat, that's exactly what I was trying to explain that I want....now, how exactly do I do it and how do I get it to not make a mess on my floor (why on earth didnt' I get into tanks before I put the handwoven rug under the bookshelves ).

That's the first "pond" I ever saw that looks like a garbage can...

Why not trade in the can for a Rubbermaid container with straight sides??

That way you could soak your tired feet after work and watch the fish swim between your toes.

LOL at Gary- Measure how far from the floor to the point where your filter would fit. Maybe have help and hold the filter up to the height it would have to be to clear the uneven curves. Measure from the Part that would sit right on the edge of the tank lip to the floor. This would be the length of the board you need. Then measure the width of the inset part your step father cut- this will be the width of wood to get. Around here the hardware and lumber stores will cut a board to length for you. (Also if you have somthing else that will possibly work height wise and thick enough to support your filter use that. I'm thinking a shelf from a puter desk or bookcase that is extra here.) Next you would need a two bolts, washers and nuts at least and a drill w/bit same diameter as bolts. Drill your holes in the upper part of the tank that is not under water & then mark the board holes thru the tank holes. (You know what I mean? Holding the board up in place then with a pencil draw around the hole edges onto the board.) Then drill the holes into the board. You can then bolt the board into place & use silicone to cover the bolts so they don't rust later. Now at this point or maybe even before have your waterfall extention ready to put on. I really haven't a thought there other than maybe attaching (with JB Weld part of an old filter outflow to the one you have as you will need a definite extention there.) JB Weld is a "man" glue. LOL It works to attach metal to metal or glass or other surfaces. Hope that helps a little and the mess is a little one.

Also forgot to mention since the board would be fitted against a curve somewhat on the bottom, if you have sterofoam in your plans, cut "shims" to fit between the the tank bottom side and the board to fill in the area and stabilize the bottom of the board a little. JB Weld could be used maybe here as well. LOL I feel like Gary Roland talking about NIC.

Gary, that is a Rubbermaid container with straight sides. She has a Rubbermaid Stock Tank and many people use these as DIY indoor tanks/ponds.
