hi, i have recently purchased a 190litre (50 gallon) 4' tank and want to purchase a filter so i can get it cycling. im in australia and the petshops offer jebo, fluval or aquaone brand filters- tho im sure i could get another brand on the net if needed. i was looking at fluval 405 or aquis 1000 or the jebo809. i am intending to have a tropical set up with a lot of plants- tho havent decided what fish or anything as of yet. any advice?

Hi,

We've had a Jebo 819 running on our 6' 180 gallon moderately planted community tank since just before christmas and it is working well so far. Our LFS has been using the same model on their 2 big display tanks for more than 12 months with no problems.

It's so quiet that we don't even hear it. The only minor issue with it so far(which you may not have with the smaller model) is that the hose connections are on a funny angle so it doesn't fit under our tank properly and sits on the floor at the end.

We did find it available from an online aussie retailer for much cheaper than they were in the LFS (about $100 less even with P&H) but we took a printout to the LFS and they discounted it.

Overall so far - a reasonable quality canister filter at a very reasonable price.

Happy Shopping

nice tank by the way troppo- do you plant all your plants straight into the gravel or do you use the small pots you can bury? i want to have loads of plants but am worried about disturbing all the roots when vacuuming.

Thanks for the compliment on our tank Fandan.

All our plants are planted straight into the gravel, the gravel is about 2-3 inches deep, it doesn't really upset the plants too much when we do the gravel vacs, occasionally one may get uprooted if we are a little over-zealous, thankfully the vals are rather forgiving in that respect.

If you are going to go with the Jebo, you might as well go with the 819 if you can fit it, its really not that much more expensive, has 5 media trays and a 1200 LpH max flow rate which combined will allow for more flexability later, it also has adjustable flow valves on the intake and return lines.

The one we found online was AU$130 + P&H but our LFS had one instock at AU$250 which as we said before they promptly reduced when shown a printout, so it pays to shop around and bargain with your LFS to get the best deal possible.

We also have an Aquaclear 500 HOB that has been going for over ten years so we can confirm their durability.

Have fun shopping, let us know what you get.
