Im having some issues with my Aquaclear 30 on my 20gal High tank.

It seems to be taking a while for the biological media (biomax) to establish.

I never used to have this problem with the Marineland Biowheel filters but they were noisy.

My question: Is the Biomax used with the Aquaclear and Fluval filters an inferior biological media? It just seems the the biowheels ability to let oxygen on the pleats is better than haveing my biomax submerged under water.

The biowheel is a more efficient and effective media, however like you said it can be a bit more noisy, also in planted tanks that utilize CO2 it has a tendency to cause a greater surface agitation which may not be good. I personally like the filtering capabilities of the biowheels and think the extra noise created is worth putting up with.

Hi,

Could you be more specific on how long it's been since you put in the bio-max? 1 week, 3 months??

Thanks
