milkyboy Hobbyist Posts: 88 Kudos: 81 Votes: 4 Registered: 03-Dec-2005 | Hi, what exactly does a fluid bed filter do? I found this one http://www.aquariumproducts.com. au/prod584.htm And this powerhead to go with it http://www.aquariumproducts.com. au/prod1095.htm For some reason anything .com.au isnt linking so just delete the gap between .com. and au Last edited by milkyboy at 30-Dec-2005 04:14 Milkyboy |

The sand provides a massive surface area for bacteria to grow. A UV steriliser kills micro-organisms. They don't do the same thing. Fluid Bed = Provide place for life. UV = Prodive place to kill life. A fluid bed filter would be good to set up in junction with your canister filter where your canister filter could contain just mechanical and chemical filter media so it could act as a massive prefilter and then the fluid bed would provide all the biological filtration you'd need. -- Gomer |

Highly recommend alot of airation and surface agitation to put loads of 02 back into the tank. Also beaware this is a cheap DIY project but must remember when electricity shuts down and restarts during a power outage that pumps will start hard and push sand out the top so its best to have a small catching system like there would be in a Co2 system. Just add a small bottol inline or some type of container to catch any sand that may fly out. Will work fine without the above just need to replace sand once in a while for any that may have been spit out. Also buy a very reliable pump/power head for the job. If it fails there isnt much time to save it. |
