I've just bought a Fluval 404 canister (yay!) and everything is great, the only thing is it is impossible to get the spray bar above the surface of the water. It seems to work fine below and circulates the water right through the tank. Is there a reason it's not a good idea?

If it's a planted tank it's actually better to keep below surface to minimise surface agitation and keep in the CO2.

If non planted the only issue may be getting the water oxygenated enough. If running airstones this wouldn't be an issue.

Hi,

Filter spray bars are usually fine just under the water surface, as long as they aren't too far in you'll still get quite satisfactory water surface movement and airstones shouldn't be a necessity unless you run into problems.
