Hello well I have a problem, my hob filter keeps overflowing. I put in two new filter pads last night and by the time I got up they were filled and overflowing.

Does anyone know what this is caused by.

i know i am not overfeeding them because I didnt even fed them last night. So that can't be it.

Is there anything else it could be???

Its starting to be a huge problem, and costing plenty of money.

Thanks Alot,
Angel Eel

Filter pads? I take it you're using a penguin or a tetra tech that has the cartridge inserts that slide down into the box rather than an AC that has the basket with the sponge?

If so ....

I have had similar issues with one of my filters that's like that....if I'm replacing the pads and press them in too far. Try lifting it back up and out and slowly slide it in, you may even need to leave the slightest gap below the pad ....not as efficient but I've found it works and keeps it from overflowing .

if it has the option to slow the flow rate. kick it down a notch and see how it works

hmm still overflowing.....

I wonder could I have an overstocked tank???

In it there is
One toonie sized angelfish
One African Butterfly
8 Corydoras
4 Ottos
One large apple snail

I don't understand, this is one of my most pristine tanks and the bloddy thing keeps doing this.

Any more help is great.
Angel Eel

EDIT: It is a 29 Gallon

How many gph does your filter handle? You might not be overstocked but if the filter is underrated it'll seem like you are :%).

1. What kind of filter is this and model ?
2. How is the overflowing costing you money ?

There is an obstruction or mechanical problem with your filter. Stocking or flow rate not a factor here.

If it's not cartridge height, check the biowheel.
is it turning ?

You will not belive this one, there was a suction cup stuck in the bottom where the water divides in two not letting it get out.

Thanks for all of your help
Angel Eel

it was costing me money because I kept buying filter every three days. Then i got sick of that and it was every 5.

I'm glad it was an obstruction and not a mechanical problem ! Much easier and faster to fix.
Cheerz,
DaFish

ps - sounds like alot of filter cartridges you bought. If you replace cartridge once and it does same thing, it is not the cartridge. (sounds lke printer problem LOL)

That was a fax machine anyway !

PC load letter .

BTW angeleel....you do know you can rinse out the cartriges and reuse them. If yours have the carbon sealed inside carefully cut along the top to remove the carbon and replace with loose. Rinse the filter pad itself in used tank water to get the gunk off. Saves money and does keep the tank even more stable :%).
