Could i use halogen bulbs as lighting for my tank?

If so, does anyone know a place i can find mains units to hold halogen bulbs?

It's usually not a good idea - Halogens are basically more intense incandescents. It's still the wrong spectrum, they still put out a ton of heat and not as much light, etc. Fluorescents are your best bet, and, hey, they're cheap and available!
