What do you guys and gals think about Hydor?

Thinking of getting a Hydor PRIME 10 300lph canister for a 55G breeding tank (discus of course)

Has anyone had any experiance with this product or this brand?

Are there any other reasonably priced low LPH canister filters that you personally have tried and liked the results?

There will also be a couple of sponge filters in this tank for some surface agitation.

I have used hydor products for a number of years. Here in the uk they have been selling motorised aerators nearly as long as ive been alive, and ive seen examples of those aerators still running. From that point of view I can highly recommend the integrity of the impellors magneto principle motors. They will overheat quickly if allowed to block, but properly maintained they run for many years trouble free. Beyond that though, I think the features of the filter are much of a muchness with many others. The media will be completely interchangeable with other manufacturers equipment, so from that point of view they sound quite flexible.

The Hydor 10 is only rated for aquariums to 40 gallons, so is that really what you're looking for?

I personally like the economical Eheim ECO canisters and I'm utilizing one on my 55 gallon setup and it does a good job. I think they are similarly priced (with similarly rated models) as the Hydor's.

Eheim canisters are probably the best you can get. I personally have had great luck with them. I'd suggest an ecco 2234 for your particular needs.

I don't hear much bad or good about hydor. They just aren't popular enough, bad enough, or good enough to really have a reputation either way. Wouldn't count it out but if you want a potential alternative Rena is a better known brand that rates pretty high and it's not that expensive. Eheim ecco would definitely be a good choice but it depends if you want to spend that much since you did say reasonably priced.
