Could i use spot lights which are wired up from the ceiling to light my tank for brighter light?

Or is this silly because the liights are too high up and will use more electricty up etc?

Just wondering....

you can, but it may not look pretty. if your tank is long, you might end up with an uneven distribution of light (picture several flashlights shining down into your aquarium).

Won't work for light for plants, but I do have recessed spots in my house and it does make for nice water and light patterns on the rocks, but it's not really the best form of lighting the tank. It will use more electricity, but if it's also part of the rooms light then it might be worth it. I know one company here in the states has a florescent spot light available.

I use a 48" shop light hanging on the wall above my tanks. All I use to cover the tanks are hinged glass lids. For tanks without live plants, I see no problems with doing this.

Maybe I'm missing something, but lights hanging from the ceiling sounds like MH pendants, which work extremely well - and make for great lighting of open-top planted tanks. Expensive but very very nice, and attractive.

i think it depends on the type of lighting. i have used 48" shop lights before, but the term "spot light" brings up a different image in my mind.
