Hi,
I am looking into getting a cannister filter for my 170L tank and am planning on keeping angels, tetras, rams. I really can't afford an eheim as i'm a broke uni student. Has anyone had any experiences with Jebo? Is it quiet? Also i have read alot of mixed responses about fluval. These are cheaper than eheim but are they better than jebo?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

I use a Fluval myself and can't help but feel they have a longer/more proven track-record than Jebo. I really can't say enough good things about how it has worked out for me

However, for my next tank I'm seriously considering Jebo myself, I have heard good feedback about them in other forums, and 'cause I want to seriously over-filter the tank, will probably end up running two of whatever I get at once.

The _main_ problem I can see is that Fluval seems to have better backup parts-wise, being distributed in a greater number of stores etc.

If money is truly tight then Jebo could be the way to go, as you can get an 838 for less than a Fluval 304 or even 204 in many places, and the other models seem the same (i.e. an equivalent Jebo is less expensive than the next model down in the Fluval range).

At the end of the day, the best way to judge a filter, IMHO, is not purely on the specifications, but on how they perform on a DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR basis.

I can't help but feeling that some of the new "up and coming" makers of canisters will end up changing the lay of the land once they have more time to prove themselves, and will ultimately upset a lot of Fluval loyalists and Eheim purists

Regards,
Dex

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. In regards to the question about what bad things i've heard about fluval - see the post: Canister filter??? By XxxxMaddawgXxxx on 07-Aug-2004 04:32.
While some people seem to swear by fluval, others clearly do not. So now i'm a bit confused, as i really don't want to waste my money by buying an unreliable filter.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi again Misty,

I had a look at that post and the main complaint I saw against Fluval (which I have heard a few times) is with starting problems.

Now, the only time I have had a problem with starting is under the following conditions:

1) The tubes have been drained for some reason

2) The canister NOT being empty of water.

So long as the tubes still have water in them AND the canister is empty of water (as would be the case if you had just reattached it after cleaning) then it will either fill itself once the valve is opened or at most require one or two pumps on the primer.

When the canister is full of water it seems to prevent siphoning from the tank (I'm presuming owing to the pressure required to move water as opposed to air).

If the tubes have been drained for any reason, then so long as you follow the Fluval instructions (i.e. be sure to have the output temporarily lifted clear of the water) then a few pumps on the primer is all that is needed to get the water up and over the side of the tank in the intake tube, which immediately starts a siphon that will fill the canister.

Dex

I run a JEBO 815 on my 70g tank.

i find it really good

they have tons of media room

the aren't the quietest of filters, but aren't as bad as aqua-one internal filters and power heads :%)

another thing is they have really big pipes......bigger than most filters. they don't clog up as easy...but you can't buy attachments like surface skimmers ect.

oh yeah, they don't self prime, so you have to suck on the outlet to get it going......i have ended up with a mouthful of aquarium water more than once (it doesn't taste to good for some reason )

over all, i rate them better than the fluval '03 series, but havn't owned any eheims or fluval '04 series so can't compare them

hope that helps a bit

Hi, thanks everyone for your help.
I ended up getting an eheim off ebay quite cheap - $160 AU - about as much as i would pay for a fuval in a shop. Thanks again for the info.

eheim for that price? WOW thats awesome! was it new?

yes iv also heard alot of probs with the fluval range, i was talking to someone who repairs canisters and he said he gets alot of complaints from people using the 204, 304 etc. range (the rectangular ones), saying they clog up easily etc.

however they guy said that he recons the older models, the 203 etc range (the cylinder ones) are heaps better... anyway i know thats pointless now that u have ur beautiful eheim (just to make us all poor buggers jelous ]:| ) just thought id let everyone else know too!
