How do i retain the good bacteria when i replace my filter media?

change one media at a time if ur filter has more than 1 cartidge like the emperor or AC filters. other filters like penguins, u dotn have to worry about due to the bio wheels.

Rather than changing the foam or floss, simply change out the carbon. For some filters this is easeir than others. I have both the ones that use foam blocks, and the ones that use floss sleeves. Since I only use carbon for removing meds it's easy to simply rinse off the floss/foam in used tank water and return it to the filter. Otherwise it's a bit of a pain to remove the carbon from the floss sleeve :%).
