Quick question about canisters | |

I have a Fluval 204 on my 32g and before that I had a AC 200. Before the fluval i had roughly 6x filtration with the AC (200gph). Would 6x be considered low filtration? I wasnt completely happy with the AC so i got a fluval 204 which has 180gph. I know that canisters dont fit in well to the gph rule. I now have around 5x filtration with the Fluval. So is this enough filtration or should I add my AC back on? If I am correct the gph rule for canisters is equal to about double for an HOB? Is this right? I just want to clarify all this because I have been confused for a while. |

Most people strive for a 10x volume circulation on HOB filters (I personally have no issues with 4 times per hour as I use an AC 70 on the lowest setting on my 29G). The reason here is that there is only a small actual filter area (also bacterial “nesting” area) available and tank water needs to be pushed through often. The larger the filter area becomes, the less often you have to push the water through it. Canisters offer much larger areas as HOBs and that is why the gph can be greatly reduced. So I guess one can derive the rule: The larger the filter area the lower the gph can be. Makes sense? Ingo |
