I know that buying fish at walmart is not the best idea but has anyone ever purchased or still own the 29 gallon Regent aquarium kit they sell with a Aqua Tech HOB filter.

its all junk aside from the tank. i have a 10g from walmart, the heater smoked within a couple weeks and the filter is bairly enough for the size of the tank. if i was ever to put a real stock listing into it the filter would never keep up. it was allways intended for a solo betta so i didnt mind this but the heater was more money in the long run because i had to replace it.

Sin is right, they only provide you with the bare minimums...

Meaning the filter your going to get with that kit won't handle the bio load that the tank could be stocked to...
As Sin said, the tanks good the rest.....not so much

Very good to know, thanks. I'll go for buying each piece separately. Just looking to start my first 29 gallon freshwater community tank & some plants. I'll stay away from the kits. Up to this point I have kept only bettas in smaller tanks.

My very first tank was a Regent 10g set. I still own it, and all components, after 5 years, are still functional.
Depending on your objective, the kit may be good enough. It's been a long time since I've looked at the Regent kits, so I'll rely on [failing] memory.
The heater appears to be a Hagen spin-off. It's a HOB-type heater. My preference is a submersible heater. NEVER scimp on the quality of heater you use. It's a critical piece of equpment (unless you are keeping coldwater species).
The filter (in the 10g) is a penguin spin-off, but it did not come with a biowheel. My current preference is cannister filters.
The full hood is good for fish-only aquariums. The single tube fixtures don't provide sufficient light intensity for planted aquariums. Of course, that depends on your plant selection.
It don't believe it came with gravel, so it's not a 100% complete kit. I may be mistaken here.
Nor did it come with a stand.

To summarize, if you are willing to make trade-offs, then a Regent kit may be right for you. If you can afford to spend the extra money, then you will do much better buying top-quality (as good as you can budget) components seperately.

if you have a petcetera store nearby their tanks are ok. and cheaper than walmart (i don't normally condone buying anything from petcetera cause i hate it... but their tanks are ok) it comes with an undergravel filter. the only thing i see with buying all components seperately is that the hoods/light strips are outrageously priced (in canada anyway)

Yep, a petcetera just down the road. A petsmart is opening up here later this year.
