african_man Enthusiast Posts: 167 Kudos: 139 Votes: 2 Registered: 27-Jul-2005 | i have a aproxx 30L tank home to two shell dwellers recently the tank has been moved to my room but the noise of the filter is affecting my sleep the filter is one of those cheap box filters (basicaly a plastic box with filter wool and rocks in it and air passing through it) the 2 other tanks in my room (i no im a freak) are a 4 and 3 foot with canister filters they dont worry me at all. what sort of filter should i get? i don't want UGF becase the little guys dig. also HOB might make noise with the cascading water. is this assumption correct? im fairly keen on HOB provided you guys think its Quiet otherwise are there mini canisters? all suggestions welcomed thanks in advance. |

When I first got it, it made all kinds of noise... That is until I noticed I didnt put the lid on all the way. Once I put the lid on correctly, it is quiet as a mouse (no more vibrating noise). The cascading noise is very minimul with the Aquaclear, you will still get a little bit, but you can adjust it to minimize the noise. I have also had good luck with the Tetra and Topfin HOB models. They dont keep the water as clean as the Aquaclear, but they dont keep that water as nice. I hope this helps! Good luck! Fish CAN fly! |

Actually, I've had up to five in my room at one time. You get used to the noise pretty quickly. I have trouble sleeping in rooms without tanks now. Another thing that helps keep noise down is to make sure you have your tank filled all the way. I check all my tanks every night to make sure they're full. ______________ Cake or death? |

If the water in the tank is high enough where the water coming out of the filter skates across the surface of the water, you will not hear it You'll know when it's time to replace water as you will hear a slight trickle. By then you only have to replace a gallon or so of water, so it's really a good option. It'll be a big difference between that and your corner filter. Bloop blooop bloop bubbly blip bloop |
