My new 20g has a small leak near the top of the tank. Would aquarium sealant patch it up? Would it be a permanent fix? And would I just put the new sealent on top of the old silicone, or do I have to scrape off the old stuff and start over?

I would just put the new sealent right on top because scraping it off will probably make it leakk more. It is not permanent though. Just a quik fix.

No personal experience, but I have heard that you have to COMPLETELY remove all the silicone before resealing the tank. Also, make sure it is a hole in the sealant, not the glass itself. If it were me, I would just buy a new 20g (since without the equipment they really aren't all that much) and turn the old tank into a house for lizards, rats, any dry pet. Or even a newt tank, since the leak is near the top.

Good luck

You guys sure it wont be able to fix it permanently? The water only drips out, its a very tiny hole.

That may be true now, but that small hole has the potential to weaken the whole thing and cause a HUGE disaster later down the road.

I actually wouldn't make a big issue out of it if it's right at the top. Just keep the water level a centimeter or so below the rim and avoid overfilling at all costs. I have a 10 with a tiny leak at the very top that I haven't been able to locate. It's been fine for about six years of holding water so far... or maybe it was nine (forget which 10 is which)...
