It would depend on whether or not you are injecting Co2 and the method you are doing it. If your not injecting co2 it probably doesn't matter much. In most cases you want the return under the water column to minimize co2 loss. My Scapes |

Most return tubes are under the surface by one inch. I was wondering about the current either running a spray bar return vertical.
