T12 is just a size of bulb. There's normal output, high output, very high output, and over driven normal output. I think that's all . There's a suite of bulbs out there and some will do and some won't. If you are trying to grow plants, I'd suggest a kelvin rating of about 6,500K. These are generally easy to find, either at the LFS, wal-mart, home depot, or something like that.

If you are just using the light to light up a fish only type tank, then you use whatever kelvin rating that you like the most.

So to answer your question, they can be used, and they are common enough to have many choices of color range.

T-12 designates the shape and size of the bulb. The size of the bulb is in eigths of an inch diameter. So a T-12 is 12 1/8ths of an inch, or an inch and a half around. 12's are very common, and many fixtures accept these bulbs. Smaller diameter bulbs sometimes require electronic ballats to fire and are more energy efficient, so they're used in warehouses and garages etc.

Many temperature ranges are available, and I'd suggest you go with matty's suggestion of 6500k.
