I just stubbled across a nice 38 gallon tank with glass to and lighting. I am looking for and inexpensive stand and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the metal(wrought iron stands) Any problems with collapes are holes in floors. They just look a little flimsy. The price is right though.

I have never messed with the metal stands. I have built all my own out of 2x4's.

Here is a picture. I think I have 20 to 30 bucks into it.

But not everybody is a Handyman Wingsdlc, and/or has the tools at home to build their own stands.

I would be way too stupid and I wouldn't trust my own construction to hold hundreds of pounds of water .

ctt33 – You should also be able to find inexpensive wood stands if you don’t like the metal one (I unfortunately do not know how well they are constructed). What are your tank dimensions anyway?

I normally build my own stands, but when I bought a used 25 gallon setup I didn't have time to build a stand. So I just used the metal stand that came with the tank.
Compared to my wooden stands the metal is very unsteady. But since my tank isn't in a high flow area, I haven't had any problems with it.
If there is going to be lots of movement around the tank, you might want to look into a wooden stand.

I have my 20 long and my 10 gallon on the same iron stand (dual setup)... it is fairly sturdy from front to back, but does move a bit side to side. I personally wouldn't get a similar stand for anything bigger than a 20long/29, but that's entirely up to you. While it does sway a bit, it seems otherwise sturdy.

One thing to keep in mind though... it IS metal... if you hit it (especially with anything else metal), it resounds like a gong... my fish HATE that. It can be a very noisy stand compared to a wooden one.

However, it's not easy to find a wooden stand that will allow for two aquariums... so this was my best bet. In the future, I might make my own, or search more diligently for a different dual stand.

Thanks for the great replies. I slowly gathering the material to get the tank going. By the way the dimensions are 36x12x20. I probably will not start it for a month or two. I am going to hunt for a good solid wood stand. maybe find a old Desk at a garage sale or something.

I have a wooden stand for my 79 gallon, and a metal (iron) stand for my 56 gallon. I also keep a 23 gallon tank and some other stuff at the bottom, but the 23 gallon is empty. I think my iron stand is pretty sturdy, but I had a fabricator make it.

been there on this one... but the wrought iron stands are good, i have one with my 150g tank on top and a 40g on the bottom and its been up for 3 months now. yes the tank does move when you push on the tank or stand, but its pretty stable.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction
