The only way they could be "bad" is if you don't change the bulb every 6 months... UV Sterilization bulbs lose effectiveness at about 6 months. Failing to replace the bulb every 6 months (even if it's still "on" ) will cause your fish to become sick because they can not handle normal waterborne parasites and diseases.
