I didn't think that anybody still sucked on the tube, I never had any directions with my first gravel vac, but there was no way I was putting my mouth on it.

Out of necessity I use the suck-method for my tank on the bottom of a double stand. I never figured out anything easier and it doesn't bother me at all. People use to syphon gas, probably still do, and I'd rather have a mouthful of fish water than gas

LOL when I had my first tank I used to suck on the end of the tube but after a mouth full of water I thought, there must be a easier way. And there is.

Simply shake the large tube (the bit you put into the water) up and down in the water and this will cause the water level in the tube to get higher and higher then will travel down the small end of the tube, then hey presto. It works.

Better then having a mouth full of fishy water lol.

yeah, but if you fill the hose completely up with water before you start your vac, then you don't have to suck *or* blow

are you talking resistance wise? it depends on how far you submerge the end in the tank, the farther under, the harder to blow, but if it's under farther there's more presure, so it'll work better

what i do is take the end of the syphon into the tank, blow on the small end untill the air is entirly filled the large tubey thingy, and release, the water rushes up w/ such presure, it fills itself

Not easier or faster if your hose is 40 feet long...

Maybe not for you, but I really suck!

Not easier or faster if your hose is 40 feet long...and leaks a little.

I'm a chronic tube sucker. I know a few ways to start it without, but its just too much hassle, sucking is easier.

...and faster! Precisely!

A big part of good water quality is vacuuming right?
Well in case you didn't know, you NEVER have to suck on the tube to vacuum. Just put your finger on the end of the hose, then get some water in the other end from the tank, lift it up out of the tank & release your finger so the water travels down the tube just past the tank edge, then put your finger back over the end. Put the tank end back in the water sideways so it fills with water, put the other end in your bucket and release your finger, voila! the siphon action will begin & you will laugh at yourself that you ever put your mouth on the tube!

Toirtis...I think the key word is by accident. I guess you've grown fond of the sushi soup also?

Actually, I have drank a couple of small cups on purpose to win bets.

...I've once had a mouthful of tank water. It was a pretty clean tank anyway (betta tank) so it wasn't horrible. *shrugs* Other than that, I don't have issues with starting the syphon.

I can and do use the method described above for my twenty gallon tank, but I tend to suck-start the syphon for the ten gallon, because it's on the bottom of a double stand and unless you get a fast suction going, you'll be there for hours! (The tank sits about six inches off the ground.)
