i only suck on the end when i'm cleaning my feeder breeding tank (don't use the siphon.... only the hose) i just watch for the water to reach about 3/4 the way up the hose, then let it go - i've never got a mouthful of water. for the rest of my tanks, i've always used the instructions that sand provided.

I used to be an auto machanic, and have many times sucked on syphon lines to start gasoline flowing (never stealing it, I promise!) Whenever I suck on a fish tank line, the instant I feel the water, my brain thinks of gas. Then I taste the water and am SO happy. LOL.

If anybody thinks it's gross, do it ONCE with gas! I'll take some nitrates any day!

I have a siphon that has a one way valve in it, so you just push it down, pull it back up, and push it back down and it'll start right up. I don't use that one anymore since I now have a bunch of curious little bottom feeders and bettas that like to try to get sucked up...I use airline tubing now, and I've always started it the way you described

Toirtis...
I think the key word is by accident. I guess you've grown fond of the sushi soup also?

Hey...I have always 'suck-started' siphons...and I haven't had a mouthful of water by accident in 15 years!
