Im thinking about buying a 100W for my 20 gallon tank.

Is there anything i need to know about them?

WIll they turn off automatically when the water level drops?

Do they fail in the off position?

Do they have a indicator light telling you it is on?

I did a little research, and it seems that alot of people like them, and alot of people dont.

Most say that the thermostat isnt accurate to what the tank water temp is.

My LFS only has Visi-Therm heaters, but they dp jave one ebojager, but it is like 15" long, which my tank is only 12"

any suggestions?

EDIT** one more thing, does it acually have a thermometor on it, or is that just there to tell you what the heater is set at?

So far I've had four heaters, all Ebo Jager, and three thermometers, and none of these have been calibrated correctly. Most of the time it doesn't matter much, though; I set my 200w to 72.5 and I get 75 degrees, all the time, so it's difficult to care about the error on the dial. Keep in mind that, without more accurate calibrated equipment, you're not going to be able to figure out exactly what the real temperature is. The only thing you can really do to find a good thermometer is look at a dozen of them and pick the one closest to the center.

EDIT: One of my thermometers reads the right temperature.

Most of the time, when people are complaining about lousy heaters, they're worried about good temperature maintenance. If you find a heater that can keep the temperature from visibly fluctuating more than 1/4 to 1/2 degree, you're in good shape.

I have two visi-therms in my 55 at work and they have worked very well for about 2 1/2 years now. I just switched a rena cal in my 45 at home to an ebo jager about 2 months ago. The indicator light on the rena was flickering, so instead of waiting for something to happen to it, I bought the ebo after reading good things about them here. I think it's well made and has worked very well so far. I also switched a visitherm in my 20 to an ebo. The visitherm was working fine, I just wanted to change it so I have a back up.

I have one and love it. You can tell that it's extremely well made. If you ask around, it's always the one that comes up as being especially reliable and well made. Mine has some discrepancy between the temperature indicated on the heater dial and the temperature indicated on the thermometer. But if you adjust the dial so that it keeps the temperature you want, it's not a big deal. IMHO, the heater is one of the most important pieces of aquarium equipment you buy and it's worth getting a good one.

I've never had Ebo-Jagar, but I run visi-therm in all of my tanks and have never had a problem with them. They've always been reliable and reasonably accurate at attaining the temperature I set for them.
