5 will give you 2.5wpg which will be enough for most moderate light plants, you'll want more for the higher light plants. It may not be possible to get that many lights over the tank so if you're going for a high light tank you may want to look for Power Compact (PC) lights.
Is this for a freshwater or saltwater tank? If it's freshwater 10,000K is a bit high and will likely lead to algae issues. You'll want lights in the 6700K range for best plant growth.

*shrug* your tank your algae problem then. Freshwater plants do just fine in the 5500 to 6700K range. Much more than that and the algae uses more of the light than the plants do. You can try it and replace the bulb if you're finding you have too much of an algae problem.

I concur. I had 10,000K bulbs on my tank since that is what came with my Orbit fixture. Algae city.

Since going to 8700K and putting them on a 8 hour cycle on my time the algae is gone.
