Hi all. I was just wondering, for those of you who use air pumps, How do you keep them quiet? Are there any tricks to it? I have a few pumps, from the cheap $5.00 model to an expensive pump guaranteed to be silent, and to me they are pretty quiet but my wife is always whining about the noise. just wondering what I could do. gonna get another pump in the morning to upgrage the cheap one. And do I really need one, my tank is planted and the filter discharge into the tank (I keep the water a couple inches below the return) makes plenty of bubbles itself. j/w. thanks

I only use air stones in my small betta tanks that have UG filters... AKA they NEED them. Your filter should provide enough aeration in your tank; most people have them in larger tanks just for effect.

To silence mine, I place the pump inside an old sock.

Hey Divertran,

I never use air pumps in my planted tanks as the aeration causes the CO2 to escape from the water at a higher rate, and the CO2 is what the plants need for their photosynthesis. Your filter discharge should be more than enough to keep the water surface moving. If you do want to keep one of the airpumps running, then try hanging it on a string, then the only noise you will hear is the vibration inside the pump and no longer the noise of the pump shaking on the shelf.

LOL, and I thought i was the only one out there putting my air pumps into old wool socks.

cut a hole in the toe for the cord, pullit through then fold the sock over the pump a few times

Thanks all. Thats what I thought too, doc, but after just a few hours w/o the pump in the 10 gal tank the guys were gasping at the surface so I put it back in and then they were fine.

never thought of wrapping it up in a sock, what a simple solution.
