Four thermometers on the tank in this pic, four different temps (the 4th is a stick on type). After experimenting when I first started keeping fish I ended up using the metal type on the left. But I noticed the other day that the temp seemed off and it was a normal day, normal room temp, I hadn't done a water change.

It's very frustrating ]:| For various reasons (fry, etc) I'm particular about tank temps...is this common or is there a good thermometer I should invest in?

Thanks

There are some high-quality digital thermometers available, which claim to be quite accurate. Some of these even show the room's temperature along with the tank temp. Some of the better ones will issue an alarm if the temperature in the tank goes above or below a set range.

Also available are wireless thermometers, which are expensive as therms go, but supposedly very accurate. They use radio waves to measure water temperature. I have never gotten the chance to use one of these and cannot vouch for their accuracy; but they are very popular. If you're willing to pay a little extra, one of these babies might be worth trying out.

Here are some links to the digital and wireless thermometers on the market:

As for myself, I use the middle thermometer in your picture. It seems to work okay, so I'm not going to rush out and get a new one. My only major complaint is that algae likes to grow between the thermometer and the tank glass, where my bristlenose can't get to it.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
