This is probably an incredibly stupid question but at some point to bio-wheels stop?

I was going into my 6g today and noticed it wasn't turning. I checked the wheel on my 30g, that one is fine but my 29g isn't moving either. The filters are actually running...is this right or is there a problem?

I've found that in the past, my biowheels have had difficult moving due to restricted water flow, either through the filter pads or the intake strainer. If those two are clean, inspect the impeller assembly and make sure that area is gunk-free.

Also make sure the bio-wheel itself is seated properly.

I've had mine stop if the water level in the tank drops below a certain level. ( I have a ten gal that looses an inch of water in about 3 days to evaporation)

a benefit of bio-wheel filters is that you can blast the filter cartridges out under high pressure tap water every time they need it to prevent any slowing down of the water flow.

they do stop if the filter flow is reduced. clean everything including the intake tube to make sure its at full flow. this is why i like emperors... they spin no matter what teh flow is currently at. also, check the biowheel bearings.

Or rinse it off in old tank water or dechlorinated water as the manufacturer suggests.

Indeed, doing that would just be like wearing a belt and suspenders...

Mine does stop occasionaly, but this does indicate a problem, so immediate action as mentioned above should be enacted..

I too find they really slow if water flow is impeded, either by the filter cartridge being too loaded or by the impeller being gunked up. Last week it was a piece of java moss wrapped around the impeller where it stuck into the base of the filter.

Make sure you take the pump apart at least monthly to clean off the crusty stuff that grows around the rubber pieces at either end of the impeller so it spins good. I do it monthly, and sooner if I see flow is impeded, or the wheel is moving too slowly, or if water is going over the "overflow".

I have never had a biowheel stop, other than when I had the flow setting reduced for feeding.

Also, if this is the type where water squirts onto the wheel, make sure the holes in the tube are not plugged. This needs to be scrubbed out monthly too.

- Yes you are correct. And, they are Emporer's when they contain spraybars.

Unless, of course, you allow them to plug up with gunk
