How about a linky to a good article about this "hamburg matenfilter" thing you are speaking of? Thanks, Ingo EDIT: I guess it would be called a Hamburg Mattenfilter, right? Anyway, I somehow missed the point of the exercise. Why would you want to do that again? Are any of your tank parameters insufficient? Are you willing to lose tank space by the thickness of the mat plus the area with the powerhead behind it? Ingo |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | the big attraction was not having to clean out filters as much , losing the tank space doesnt worry me as i have some pretty big tanks, i believe the filtration on my 8f and 4f isnt good enough and i since i;m geting another four 4f tanks set up soon i was looking for some new ideas to cut down on the maintenance. and its always fun to try a new idea and see if it works. |

The bacteria generally takes 3-4 weeks to fully mature. Individual results may vary depending on bioload and temperature. LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Dan, Under these conditions, go for it. I think it is worth a test. I also think it is a good idea to create the thread in technical tinkering as you suggested. If you don’t mind, I would have a few questions about the Mattenfilter though: - Are you planning on using an additional conventional filter? If not, how would you handle situations when the addition of other media, like activated carbon, is suggested? - As the article you linked above mentions, at some point the filter will be clogged (lower water level than usual behind it). Have you thought about what it means to clean (or replace) this sucker? - Given that the filter cannot be decorated (either with plants or paint), did you think about the fact the the filter sheet will be the visual background of your tank? Just asking . Thanks, I am looking forward to your thread, Ingo |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | ingo i sort of had an idea of putting java moss over the front of the filter and getting it to grow over it. also my tanks are either black ( the 2 plywood tanks have black sealant on the inside) or will be in a cabinet that covers one end so you cant see the heaters etc. excuse my drawing but it will be something like this- the grey is the cupboard doors that will open outwards from the centre , the tanks are standard 4f dan76 attached this image: |
