I built a 55 gallon plywood aquarium and it has two bulkheads on it with soft plastic tubes leading to my plywood sump. It makes a horrible sucking sound. I actually used a pvc elbow to put inside the bulkhead and used silicone to seal it together. Is there a way to stop this horrible noise?

BTW, I couldn't seem to find any tubing that was large enough to fit around the bulkhead (I needed 1.5" ID or so).

The sucking noise is caused by expelled air escaping from your tube as water enters it, much like your toilet when you flush it. You may want to try adding a piece of airline tubing snaked down inside the overflow to allow the air a clear escape route. You may need to fiddle with the tubing to find the right position to give you the least ammount of noise. With as large an overflow as you have you may need to resort to even larger tubing than airline tho in order to evacuate enough air.
