well i was wondering if anybody ever put media on AC filters that are meant for a bigger version of your AC filters. for example, putting a sponge block for a AC 500 in a AC 300.

i do this for my AC150, the sponge block is from a AC200. i think it works better like this because the block gets squished so it traps even more fine waste. is this ok? and does any one else here do this?

The only problem I can see is that it might become too squished and your filter might overflow. And bigger media is usually more expensive, too.

I had actually been considering that and bought a multipack of the foam inserts...but I plan on cutting them rather than squishing them, I'd be concerned as well about it cutting down too much on flow. I already have trouble with the foam making the basket rise up for some reason I don't need to give it any more help .

I would assume that's from the inside of the sponge getting clogged with debris. Mine do the same thing. I've heard that using cotton batting underneath the sponge helps cut down on that. The cotton will trap the debris and allow the sponge to basically just be home for the bacteria reducing the frequency that you have to rinse the sponge. I bought some cotton batting, but haven't gotten around to cutting it up and using it yet.
